How to become a PRINCE2® trainer
Here are the steps to follow to become a PRINCE2 trainer:
- Pass the PRINCE2 Foundation exam.
- Pass the PRINCE2 Practitioner exam.
- Find an existing PRINCE2 Authorized Training Organization (ATO) to sponsor you.
- Give a PRINCE2 Foundation course with support from an existing trainer.
- Request to become a PRINCE2 trainer via the ATO and submit short, concise videos.
Let’s have a closer look at the steps below.
Step 1
The first step is to pass the PRINCE2 Foundation exam. This is the normal first step; however, you can skip the PRINCE2 Foundation exam if you already have one of the following certifications:
- Project management professional (PMP®)
- Certified associate in project management (CAPM®)
- IPMA level A, B, C or D
Step 2
Next, you need to pass the PRINCE2 Practitioner exam:
- Read the official PRINCE2 manual at least once, cover to cover.
- Practice with scenario-based questions to develop a PRINCE2 mindset.
- You must score above 66% when you want to become a trainer.
Step 3
Next, find a sponsoring Accredited Training Organisation (ATO). ATOs are listed on the PeopleCert and AXELOS websites. I sometimes help trainers become accredited and you can contact me on LinkedIn to see if I can help you.
Step 4
Next, give a PRINCE2 Foundation course under supervision of an existing accredited trainer. The existing trainer will deliver some parts of the course and leave the rest to you. Record a small part of the course to be submitted to PeopleCert. This recording should show your teaching style and capability to engage with candidates in the course.
Step 5
Next, ask the ATO to get the trainer application form from PeopleCert for you and fill it in.
Step 6
Request to be a PRINCE2 trainer:
- Your ATO submits the application to PeopleCert on your behalf.
- There’s a one-time trainer certification fee (typically €600 to €1,200).
- An annual fee (around €100 to €150) is to be paid to PeopleCert for each active PRINCE2 trainer.
- PeopleCert will conduct a video interview to assess your knowledge.
If everything is okay, you will become an accredited PRINCE2 trainer.
